The video below shows Joe Harris removing sections of the crown at the top of Starfoot, an 88.7m mountain ash that was burnt in the Feb 2009 bushfires around Kinglake. After each limb was felled out, a cross-section was taken to allow examination of the cell formation.
The Tree Works had been contracted to help a team of American scientists and canopy access specialists sample five of the tallest trees on mainland Australia, collecting timber samples at specific heights in each tree. We collected the highest twigs out of each tree, and then took samples at 5m intervals down the main stems.
